History of the Madras Urological Society

The history of the Madras Urological Society (MUS) is closely associated with the growth and development of urology as a specialised branch of medicine in Chennai and the wider region of Tamil Nadu. The Society represents the collective commitment of urologists to advancing the speciality through professional collaboration, scientific exchange, academic development and the promotion of excellence in patient care.

Over the decades, Chennai has emerged as an important centre for urological education, clinical practice and research. The pioneering contributions of Professor A. Venugopal, who established the Department of Urology at Madras Medical College, played a significant role in shaping the speciality in the region. The establishment of postgraduate urology training at Madras Medical College and the University of Madras further strengthened the academic foundation for the growth of urology in Tamil Nadu.

Against this background of academic and professional advancement, the Madras Urological Society evolved as a platform for urologists to come together, exchange scientific knowledge and strengthen professional relationships. Through its academic activities, scientific meetings and continuing medical education initiatives, the Society has contributed to the professional development of urologists and the advancement of urological practice.

Over the years, MUS has continued to encourage collaboration among urologists, promote scientific learning and facilitate interaction with the wider urological community. Its activities reflect a longstanding commitment to the dissemination of medical knowledge, the pursuit of clinical excellence and the advancement of urology as a speciality.

Today, the Madras Urological Society continues to uphold the vision of its pioneering professionals by fostering academic engagement, encouraging research and innovation, and nurturing a collaborative community of urologists dedicated to improving urological healthcare.
